Obtaining Wiki Attributes in a WebCT CE course.

--- Server: CE4.1(SUN) | Client: ??(??) ---
A faculty person wants to have Wiki attributes in his WebCT CE course. The essence of a Wiki is a ser of documents that anyone in a group can create and edit, a collective writing exercise. An additional attribute of a Wiki is that contributors need not know and understand how to use HTML.
Thus, the question is whether a WebCT CE course can accommodate a Wiki type exercise and, if so, how would that be done?

Hi Frank,
If the faculty is using CE 4.1, then I would use the Student Presentation tool. I'm not familiar with Wiki, but if you add the student presentation tool and create one group and add all of the students to that one group, then students can share one or more documents. Now, the disadvantage is, students can override each others work if there are multiple students editing the document simultaneously and then as they upload their edited document, it will overstore the current file. Students can also inadvertently delete documents. You could have students create their own folders before they download the file. This folder would be for them to upload the documents in to. If they create the folder BEFORE they download the document, then the other students can click on the newest folder and if it's empty, they know that a student is working on it, or it’s “checked out”. This way, students can see the activity and they can see the progression. I'd suggest a naming convention of 01_student_name, 02_student_name.... this will keep them in numerical order and also tell you what students is working on the file at any given point.
I hope this helps and maybe others will have ideas that they can share.

Frank,
Donna's recommendation to use the Student Presentation tool in WebCT Campus Edition up through version 4.1 is probably the best for a "wiki-like" web.
For those of us with WebCT Vista 3.0/4.0 and Campus Edition 6.0 where the collarborative Student Presentation tool is no longer available, the best alternative which you can also use in CE 4.1, is to go with an actual wiki system. There are many wiki systems available that you can easily setup and link to with the URL tool. For Vista and CE 6.0 uses, there is even a Powerlink available from Vista DevNet that will seamlessly integrate an external secure wiki into a course.
Hope this helps...
Cheers,
Bob
